Ellen Degeneres visits Feeding’s America center.

From the minute you step foot into the Foothill Unity Center in Monrovia, some 25 miles east of L.A., you get the immediate sense that these people mean business. Sure, the guy greeting you at the door is pushing 90, but you learn soon enough that when it comes to Feeding America volunteers, they come in all ages, colors, sizes and creeds. Likewise, the center’s beneficiaries span every demographic. The person coming in for a cart full of basic groceries (a $10 donation equals 90 pounds of food) could be your neighbor, a friend, a teacher or anyone struggling to scrape by in a down economy.

Those were some of the lessons learned by “American Idol” judge Ellen DeGeneres upon visiting the center as part of “Idol Gives Back.” Her host? Actor David Arquette, who volunteers twice a week at the St. Joseph’s Center in Venice.”The old statistic was 1 in 8 Americans don’t know where their next meal is coming from,” he explained. “Now, it’s 1 in 6. It went from 36 million to 49 million, so the numbers are increasing.”

Ellen’s response, like so many who confront the reality of hunger in this country: simply, “Crazy.”

The two made their way through the Costco-like aisles, flanked on all sides by crates of peanut butter, cereal, fruit, vegetables and rice. “We typically think of a soup kitchen,” David continued, “but there are 60,000 pantries like this one where they’re filling bags and carts full of groceries for people.” Indeed, Ellen was introduced to a family of five who are struggling to pay their bills on a junior high teacher’s salary. Or David offered a scenario just as close to home: “It could be an out-of-work actor who had to get some help with food so that he could pay his rent or gas for his car to get to auditions,” he said. “It is our neighbors.”

Added Ellen: “We have enough money and resources in this country, no one should be hungry…. Right now, a lot of people are struggling. We need this place.”

David will be in attendance at Wednesday’s “Idol Gives Back” special, both to represent the charity and as an “Idol” fan. It seems the show is must-see TV in David’s household. His Season 9 favorites? “I like the rock ‘n’ roll kid with the scratchy voice,” he said, referring to Lee DeWyze. “And I like the blond girl with the dreads” (Crystal Bowersox). Clearly, he’s not great with names. So how about the ladies in his life? Daughter Coco hasn’t invested herself in any one contestant, said David, but wife Courteney Cox is still lamenting one early elimination. “She had a favorite who got voted off and was a little upset about that,” said David, again hard-pressed to come up with a name. “She called him the mullet.” Say no more.

10 contestants are left and only one will have the chance to be the next American Idol. Now that we’re down to the top 10 on “American Idol,” the competition is heating up and it becomes harder each week to predict who will be sent packing.  Being a judge isn’t always an easy job and Ellen is so far doing an excellent one. She is honest, always make a good point of what most people think, but judges actually don’t talk about. But being judged is probably more difficult and a journalist asked 8 contestants about what they think of Ellen Degeneres as a judge. Here is their answers : Aaron Kelly: I miss Paula a lot, but Ellen brings a really cool vibe to the show. She’s hilarious, and I love her show, so, it’s good to have her on American Idol. Andrew Garcia: A lot of laughter and joy. She’s amazing. Just when you see her, she lights up the room. Didi Benami: She’s like that soothing person that kind of cracks a joke or will make things a little less tense in like a situation where, like, I sing, ”Lean on Me.” Katie Stevens: I think she’s hilarious. I watched her show, like, every day before I came here. So to be able to actually meet her and have her critique me is just awesome. I mean, I take their comments and I try to work with them. But nothing that they say is going to affect me too much. [EW: But it calms the nerves to see Ellen over there?] It’s a familiar face. And you’re glad to see somebody who will bring something funny to it to lighten your mood because it is so nerve-wracking being up there in front of them and being critiqued. Lacey Brown: Yeah, she’s a really fun personality. She brings kind of a viewers’ point-of-view because she’s not a singer. She knows what people like, what people want to put their attention on. So I really listen to her critiques even though she’s not the most serious person on the stage. Michael Lynche: She brings a real compassion for us as contestants, as artists, as young performers, as young people. She brings a real encouragement to us, and she’s just truly, truly honest. You can just see it in her eyes. She never wants to tell you anything that might hurt you, but she’s still being honest with us, and she really wants us to do well. And I love that. Paige Miles: Well, having Ellen is actually very comforting. She makes us smile, she makes us laugh. It’s almost kind of like, wow, a breath of fresh air after you might get creamed by some of the other judges. Siobhan Magnus: I love Ellen. It’s comforting because she’s so happy, and just positive. And, at first, I didn’t know what she would have to say musically, but she actually has some extremely valid points every time, and I love her as a judge.

8 girls and 8 boys are left after 2 weeks of live shows. 6 episodes where we have been able to see Ellen talking about banana (you heard me), flirting on Simon’s lap, and being booed. Things we aren’t used to… at all ! But it’s been a lot fun to watch ! Here are the things you missed if you haven’t watched it.

American Idol is one of the most sucessful show in the United states, followed every evening by around 30 millions people. Popularity rhymes with controversy too. With everything that has been said, Ellen looks old with the light, but is 150 000$ richer and see the devil in Simon. That sums up pretty everything that we have seen on the net so far – until the next thing. At least, what we are sure is that media are aware that Ellen is loved, and has a very positive image – and that doesn’t help them to write news.

Concerning the contestants, it is clear that Crystal is far the most talented so far. There’s no particular leader for the boys, except maybe big Mike, but that’s my personal opinion. For those around the world, who haven’t got the chance to see the show at all, this site can’t unfortunately provide you videos of the show which is under very strict copyright. But here’s a little part of it, you can see how it goes and how Ellen very professional is.

HOLLYWOOD WEEK

The Hollywood week starts this Tuesday, February 9th, on Fox.

Is Ellen going to be mean, to get along with Simon, is she going to be kind, even funny? We all heard those questions, and finally Tuesday will give us the answer (even if we have some ideas about that). Ellen Degeneres won her 11th trophy at the People Choice Awards.

The Ellen Degeneres Show won the award for the best show, winning against shows like ‘The Oprah Winfrey show’, ‘Live with Regis and Kelly’ or ‘The Tyra Banks show’.  Also, the popular TV show ‘American Idol’ won the trophy as Best TV  Competition show.
